New technology catalogue to support green transition in Vietnam
The Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority of Vietnam (EREA) and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) are launching Vietnam’s first ever technology catalogue, which is the result of the partnership between Vietnam and Denmark in the energy sector.
The Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority of Vietnam (EREA) and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) are launching Vietnam’s first ever technology catalogue, which is the result of the partnership between Vietnam and Denmark in the energy sector. This document was developed by Danish and Vietnamese experienced experts through close cooperation, based on Danish experience and customized to address Vietnamese conditions. The energy partnership between Vietnam and Denmark is part of the efforts to support green transitioning globally.
The new technology catalogue provides Vietnam with reliable input information/data for modelling to optimize its power/energy system and long term planning of the energy sector as well as supporting the country’s green transition.
The technology catalogue provides information about various power production technologies including hydropower technology, high-efficiency coal-fired technology, wind power technology, solar power technology, pumped hydro technology, batteries, etc. The catalogue contains not only data about the existing power production technologies in Vietnam but also describes power production technologies and other relevant technologies which could be applied in Vietnam in the future. The catalogue is considered an important instrument by policymakers dealing with the long term efforts of reorganizing the power/energy system in the more effective and lower cost orientation that would benefit both consumers and climate.
“The Technology catalogue is developed with the aim to provide the most up-to-date and highly reliable data about electricity generation and storage for power system long-term modelling and analysis that lays a solid ground for effective policies. The data from this catalogue is an important input for the development of the forthcoming PDP8.” Mr. Phuong Hoang Kim, Director General of EREA |
The Vietnamese technology catalogue has been developed by the Danish Energy Agency in cooperation with the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA) under the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT). The process has been open and the catalogue will be made publicly available for all interested parties, providing the Vietnamese energy sector with the newest data and a common point of reference.
Figure: Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCoE):
The figure demonstrates the cost of electricity production per unit for different technologies in 2020, 2030 and 2050. The LCoE calculations have been conducted by using DEA’s LCoE tools. A discounting rate of 10% for all technologies has been applied. Full load hours and fuel prices are based on preliminary simulations from the Vietnam Energy Outlook Report 2019. Additional technological data can be found in the catalogue, which is available for download here.
The technology catalogue will be launched Thursday 16 May in Hanoi.
More about the cooperation between Denmark and Vietnam
The Danish Energy Agency’s Centre for Global Cooperation has collaborated with the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) on matters of climate and energy since 2013. The cooperation is a part of the Danish Energy Partnership Programme (DEPP), which is financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark.
