The Powering Past Coal Alliance Global Summit 2021
Co-founded by Canada and the UK, the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) is the world’s leading initiative to rapidly phase out traditional coal-fired electricity. Since its launch in 2017, over 110 countries, subnational, and businesses have joined the Alliance. Phasing out emissions from coal power globally is one of Canada’s top environmental priorities. The PPCA is a driver of global momentum on climate action and is a high-profile platform to display leadership and ambition in phasing out coal. Canada’s leadership in the PPCA complements its international climate finance commitments, including support for clean energy alternatives to coal. The Alliance is positioned to have significant influence at global, high-level dialogues on climate change in 2021. The United Kingdom has made coal phase-out a key priority under their Presidency of the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26). Separately, the PPCA is the driving force behind UN Secretary-General Guterres’ call for “no new coal” and urgent action on coal phase-out.
On 2-4 March 2021, the UK and Canadian Governments, co-chairs of the PPCA will co-host a virtual PPCA Global Summit to boost international commitment and cooperation to shift away from coal power generation ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November 2021.
The Summit will be the year’s largest global gathering on coal power phase-out, bringing together leaders from national governments, regions, and cities, banks and investors, energy majors and grid operators, academia and NGO, youth and health groups to share their experiences and best practices on coal phase-out.
